The Olympic Torch was lit on Monday, March 31st, in the Chinese capital of Beijing. The fire was initially taken to the Olympia Stadium Antic Panathinaikon Athens. With the hope that the message of peace will take place throughout the world the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Minos Kyriakou, handed the flame to the main of China Olympics Committee, Liu Qi.
There were about 10,000 spectators at the ceremony. From Athens, the flame was carried on a flight to Beijing Special Air China. The plane had the inscription "Journey of Harmony" and China's national colors red and yellow. Television national and hundreds of school children with Chinese and Olympic flags in their hands waiting for the arrival.
Liu Qi carried the flame in a small airplane flashlight and the red carpet leading to the Gate of Heavenly Peace. There, the head of state and party leader lit the torch and handed it to the most famous athlete Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang.
Because of concerns about the protest, since it had not been in the lighting ceremony at the historic site Olympia in Greece, when the event was long accompanied by serious safety precautions. Several policemen were present in the area, even on the roofs of the surrounding area. Traffic was temporarily halted some subway stations were blocked and walkers and cyclists were kept away.
To prevent protest actions not had information on the details of the ceremony till Sunday. Unfortunately the organizers could not stay away from all the protesters, but the actions of these not shown on television, because the alleged public viewing 'was actually issued with a one minute delay. Over the next 130 days the torch will make its World Tour. Planning is a relay of 20 countries with a distance of more than 137,000 miles on five continents.
